William Hilleary purchased the land patent on the North East quarter of the South East quarter of section 21 in Township 20 North, Range 12 West in 1835. John N. Shumate purchased this 40 acres from William Hilleary in 1849. William Pentecost then purchased the property for $250 from John Shumate in 1851. Over the next ten years William Pentecost purchased nearly 100 acres along 2130 North; extending from Atwood Road west for one half mile.
William and Marsha Pentecost had 9 named children. The earliest burial found in the Pentecost Cemetery was an eleven day old infant of the Pentecost family. This infant passed away on February 2nd, 1872. This is ten years before the the cemetery was set aside as a public burying ground. William passed away on December 5th 1877.
The deed for the cemetery was transferred from the heirs of William Pentecost to the cemetery trustees on June 26th, 1883 (recorded July 18th 1883). The heirs were; Martha Pentecost, Barbara and Silas White, and Elizabeth and Thomas Atwood. The original trustees were not blood relatives of William Pentecost. They were: James Reeder, Thomas Taylor and A.J. Layton.
